A Las Vegas newspaper says it has been served a federal grand jury subpoena seeking information about readers who posted comments on the paper's Web site.
The Las Vegas Review-Journal reported Tuesday that its editor, Thomas Mitchell, plans to fight the request, which the newspaper received after reporting on a federal tax fraud case against business owner Robert Kahre.
The subpoena seeks the identities and personal information about people who posted comments on the story. The newspaper said prosecutors told the judge in the case that some comments hinted at acts of violence and the subpoena was issued out of concern for jurors' safety.
Mitchell said anonymous speech is "a fundamental and historic part of this country." The newspaper would consider cooperating if specific crimes or real threats were presented, he said.
The newspaper said the subpoena bears the name of U.S. Assistant District Attorney J. Gregory Damm, a lawyer on the Justice Department team that is prosecuting Kahre and others on charges including income tax evasion, fraud and criminal conspiracy.
Grand jury proceedings are secret, and the subpoena is not a public record.
A spokeswoman for the U.S. Attorney for Nevada declined to comment.
The newspaper said it received the subpoena June 2, a week after its story describing the government's case against Kahre, a Las Vegas construction company executive accused of paying contractors with gold and silver U.S. coins based on the precious metal value of the coins but using the much lower face value of the coins for tax purposes. Kahre and the other defendants have pleaded not guilty.

Impressionist Danny Gans' death last month was caused by a combination of heart and blood diseases and a powerful prescription painkiller used to treat chronic pain, the Clark County coroner said Tuesday.
The death was ruled accidental.
"Mr. Gans' health conditions placed him at greater risk for heart irregularities, and the hydromorphone was a factor that exacerbated those risks," Coroner Mike Murphy said at a news conference.
The official cause of death was
acute hydromorphone toxicity because of chronic pain syndrome.
Hydromorphone is a strong synthetic opioid commonly known as Dilaudid.

MGM Mirage casino co. says it may default on debt
LAS VEGAS (AP) -- MGM Mirage Inc., the gambling company owned by billionaire investor Kirk Kerkorian, said Tuesday that it may default on its debt amid development of its biggest casino project ever, the $8.6 billion CityCenter in Las Vegas.
Unless the economy turns around and more people start gambling again, the Las Vegas-based casino company believes it will break its loan agreements this year, it said in a filing with the Securities and Exchange Commission.
[HH: Shame on you, filthy degenerates! This is your fault for not doing your job. Now get out there and gamble like you mean it. Oh, and remember, there's always help and support available for your problem, just call this toll-free number. But do it later. You'll have to act fast as there's a coupon book with $50 free slotplay if you get to the casino in the next 30 minutes. Hurry, supplies are limited.)
That would mean a default on its senior credit facility, which MGM has asked to modify.
MGM Mirage will delay filing its annual report until March 17 because it is still assessing its financial position and liquidity needs, the company said in Tuesday's unscheduled filing. One factor in the delay, the company reported, was its decision last week to tap $842 million of its $4.5 billion senior revolving credit agreement to cover general expenses.
[HH: It would seem consumers aren't the only one's living off their credit cards....Maybe MGM should get in touch with one of those debt counseling places by calling the toll-free number at the bottom of their screen. After they call the gambling support toll-free number, of course.)
As of the end of September 2008, MGM Mirage had $13.29 billion in long-term debt.
....
MGM Mirage has not reported on its financial position since September nor posted its earnings for the quarter that ended Dec. 31.
The March 17 report is to include an auditor's assessment of whether MGM Mirage can continue as a company.
